What HUMN.audio is, how it works, and why the precision matters.
A binaural beat is not a sound that exists in the world. It is a sound your brain creates.
When your left ear receives a tone of 528 Hz and your right ear simultaneously receives a tone of 534 Hz, your auditory cortex detects the mathematical difference between them: 6 Hz. Because 6 Hz is below the audible range of human hearing (which begins around 20 Hz), your brain doesn't hear a sound at 6 Hz — it generates a phantom oscillation at that frequency, which then begins to synchronize with your brainwave activity. This is called frequency following response or brainwave entrainment.
This mechanism was formally documented and named by Gerald Oster in a 1973 paper published in Scientific American. The Monroe Institute subsequently built an entire research and experiential protocol around it, now spanning decades of recorded clinical observations. The neuroscience is not in dispute — brainwaves do entrain to audio frequencies. The clinical impact varies by individual, application, and protocol.
"Your brain is not passively hearing these tones. It is actively constructing them — and then beginning to oscillate at that frequency. This is not metaphor. It is electrophysiology."
Most "binaural beat" content online is not true binaural. It is mono audio — sometimes with a single slightly detuned tone added — exported without stereo separation. The defining characteristic of true binaural audio is that the two tones are physically separated: the carrier frequency plays only in the left channel, and the carrier + offset frequency plays only in the right. The difference can only be perceived when both channels reach both ears simultaneously through headphones. This is why HUMN tracks require stereo headphones, and why all audio is mastered in true stereo, never mixed to mono.

The nine solfeggio frequencies are a specific set of tones used as carrier frequencies in HUMN tracks. They function as the root pitch of the binaural pair — the frequency both ears share as a foundation.
The solfeggio scale originates from Gregorian chant notation — a system of six tones used in medieval liturgical music, associated with specific states and intentions within the monastic tradition. The system was rediscovered and extended to nine tones in the late 20th century, primarily through the work of Dr. Joseph Puleo and later Len Horowitz, whose research proposed mathematical relationships between these frequencies and biologically significant constants.
The scientific consensus on specific healing claims attributed to solfeggio frequencies — particularly around DNA repair at 528 Hz — is not established. The frequency claims are treated here as an intention and attunement framework, not as verified biology. What is established is that different carrier frequencies produce perceptually distinct experiences, and that consistent use of specific tones within a practice context creates associative entrainment over time.
The 528 Hz "love frequency" claim originates primarily from the work of Dr. Lee Lorenzen and later popularized by Dr. Leonard Horowitz. While peer-reviewed evidence for specific DNA effects is limited, the practical significance is this: practitioners who build a consistent relationship with 528 Hz as a working frequency report reliable access to heart-centred states over time. The intention framework is functional regardless of the underlying mechanism.

Standard Western music is tuned to equal temperament at A = 440 Hz — a system standardized in 1939 that divides the octave into 12 perfectly equal semitones. This system is mathematically clean and practically convenient for ensemble playing. It is also acoustically compromised: equal temperament slightly detunes every interval except the octave to make all keys work equally well.
HUMN tracks are not tuned to 440 Hz and do not use equal temperament. Instead, all harmonics and melodic elements are derived from just intonation ratios — frequency relationships based on simple whole-number ratios drawn from the harmonic series. A perfect fifth in just intonation is 3:2 exactly. A major third is 5:4. These are the ratios the human ear evolved to perceive as consonant, because they appear naturally in the overtone structure of every real acoustic instrument.
The practical result: when a HUMN track plays notes in the scale of its root frequency, each harmonic interval rings with a purity that equal temperament intervals cannot produce. The difference is subtle but cumulative — over the course of a 45-minute session, the nervous system's response to that sonic environment differs measurably from standard-tuned audio. This is the technical reason practitioners and sensitive listeners consistently report that HUMN material feels different, not just sounds different.
"Equal temperament is a compromise that made the piano possible. Just intonation is what the body actually resonates with. HUMN doesn't choose convenience. It chooses precision."
| Interval | 440 Hz Equal Temp. | HUMN Just Intonation |
|---|---|---|
| Root (C) | 261.63 Hz | Root Hz (exact) |
| Perfect Fifth | ~392.00 Hz | Root × 3/2 (exact) |
| Major Third | ~329.63 Hz | Root × 5/4 (exact) |
| Octave | Root × 2.000 | Root × 2.000 |
HUMN uses the solfeggio carrier as the root — all scale tones derive from just intonation ratios of that specific Hz value.
This is not pseudoscience marketing. This is an honest account of how Reiki practitioner knowledge is encoded into the structure of each track.
Reiki operates through a practitioner's held intention — the specific mental and energetic state the healer cultivates while delivering a session. The Reiki symbols (Cho Ku Rei, Sei Hei Ki, Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, and others) function as focal points for that intention, not as magical objects in themselves. The symbol is a container for attention.
HUMN tracks encode this intention framework into the phase structure. The deep field phase of each track — the central sustained section — is authored with a specific Reiki symbol and intention held in focus during the production process. The phase arc (descent, threshold, deep field, return) mirrors the attunement arc: the practitioner's journey from ordinary consciousness into healing space and back.
This is not a claim that the Reiki intention "travels through" the audio. It is a claim that tracks authored within a specific intentional framework, and structured to mirror practitioner-familiar attunement arcs, produce a different listener experience than tracks produced without that framework. The intention is a design constraint — one of many that together produce the characteristic HUMN experience.
528 Hz at full offset (6 Hz). Orientation phase. Body and nervous system begin to register the frequency field.
Offset sweeps from 6 Hz down to 4 Hz. The brain follows the descending beat into deeper theta. Resistance releases.
Sustained at 4 Hz. The Sei Hei Ki (harmony, emotional healing) intention held. Heart chakra activation window.
Offset rises gently from 4 Hz to 7 Hz. The practitioner's return arc — conscious re-emergence with the session integration intact.
Practical protocols for getting the most from binaural beat entrainment — for personal practice and client work.
The binaural beat effect only occurs when the two carrier frequencies reach each ear separately. Over-ear or in-ear headphones both work. Speakers mix both channels before they reach your ears — the beat effect cannot form.
Brainwave entrainment is not instant. The brain takes 4–10 minutes to begin following a new frequency. Sessions under 20 minutes are largely preparatory. The deep field begins at 15 minutes on most HUMN tracks. Plan accordingly.
The phase structure of each track is designed to carry an intention through specific energetic territory. Entering with a defined intention — even a single word or sensation — dramatically increases the coherence of the experience.
Play at a comfortable, low-to-moderate volume. The entrainment effect does not require loud audio — in fact, excessive volume can create tension that interferes with the theta descent. If you can hold a quiet conversation over the track, it's approximately right.
For Reiki sessions: play the Practitioner Attunement for yourself via your own earbuds while your client listens to Heart Opening or Deep Sleep through their own headphones. Two simultaneous frequency fields, separately targeted.
Daily use at the same time — particularly before sleep (Deep Sleep) or at the start of a meditation practice — builds associative conditioning. Within 2–3 weeks of consistent use, the body begins entering the target state faster at the beginning of each session.
The descent phase of all tracks is timed to a natural breath cycle. Box breathing (4-4-4-4) or 4-7-8 breathing during the first 10 minutes accelerates the descent into theta. After the first 15 minutes, let the breath become passive.
Keep a notebook beside you and write for 5 minutes immediately after a session ends — before checking your phone or speaking. Theta-adjacent states are highly generative. What surfaces in the return phase is often the session's core material.
